    Installing Your Green Screen Backdrop

This green chroma key paint does not require professional installation. Anyone can apply it.

Before creating your green screen background, you will need to ensure all surfaces to be painted are clean, dry and free from loose materials.

We recommend using our Smart Greenscreen Paint Pro Basecoat (included in your kit) as it has been tested to work with this product.

Simply prepare the surface, apply the Green Screen Basecoat, and allow it to dry. Very lightly sand the surface so it is smooth and apply the second Green Screen Basecoat. Then apply two coats of our green chroma key paint, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second coat (approx 1-2 hours at 20°C). A full application guide is available to help you apply our green screen paint.

Please note: the smoothness of the wall can affect product performance so make sure you prime and sand your surface beforehand and between Green Screen Basecoat. This will guarantee you have the best green screen background on the market.

Why Buy Smart Green Screen Paint?

Using a green screen paint eliminates the need to try to get the wrinkles out of a traditional fabric screen. With the proper lighting setup and an ultra smooth surface you are guaranteed easier editing in post production.

Painting a green screen backdrop will also free up a considerable amount of space. You don’t need stands and other support gear to hold the screen. It’s always ready to use.

Smart Green Screen Paint transforms any smooth surface into a high performance green screen background. Our green chroma key paint is pigmented with holocrystalline minerals and organic coloured pigments. The result is more even lighting with less chance of surface reflections colouring the image.

Green screen paints are ideal for when you require high performance chroma key functionality on a more often basis. This product is quick and easy to apply, for a more permanent installation. Create a green screen surface with no size limitations.

Smarter Surfaces’ paints are an environmentally friendly option with industry beating low VOC levels, compared to competitors. The use of an advanced pure acrylic resin system allows formulation at low VOCs, whilst maintaining excellent film hardness and adhesion. We are also isocyanate free in all our coatings. This means it’s safe to apply with people in a reasonably ventilated room.

We guarantee our chroma key paint for 1 year if applying on a wall. All our quality guarantees are backed up by independent certifications. FAQs

    What is a green screen?

A green screen is a screen which is a very particular shade of green. It allows video editors to isolate the subject in a scene or video and add special effects to the background. They can also just add a simple background, depicting a scene that is set elsewhere.

How does a green screen work?

By using a very particular shade of green it is possible to remove or “key out” this specific colour digitally in post production. You can then add whatever you like to the background or add special effects. Removing the coloured background is also referred to as “chroma keying.”

    Why are green screens green?

To make post production easier. In order for it to be easy to remove the background colour it needs to be a colour that’s not in the shot. This green is very different to human skin tones and generally is not a colour used for clothing, etc.

    What is green screen paint?

Green screen paint is a key component in video, photography and media production used for “chroma keying”. It creates a durable and even surface to make post production easier when keying out the background.

    Green screen vs Blue screen

A green screen has a higher luminance and reflects more light than a blue screen meaning less lighting will be needed during filming, therefore cutting down on costs. Green is also a colour less commonly found in clothing, making post-production editing easier. Blue screens have a lower luminance making them better for dark or night scenes.

Green Screen Paint vs Green Screen Fabric

Using a green screen paint eliminates the need to try to get the wrinkles out of a traditional fabric screen. Painting will also free up a considerable amount of space. You don’t need stands and other support gear to hold the screen.

Specialist green screen paint vs standard green paint

You need a very narrow range of colored light to reflect off your screen and get captured by your camera. The paint you choose will have a major impact on what your camera sees. A regular green paint won’t provide this.

Our paint is made specifically to be the optimal color. The resulting green color is more pure and less likely to reflect any colors that would cause problems in post production. The ultra-flat matt finish of the paint has no sheen. The flat finish of interior house paint still has a small amount of sheen/gloss. The result is more even lighting with less chance of surface reflections coloring the image.

Do I need to prime my surface before applying green screen paint?

Yes. We have supplied a Green Screen Basecoat with our green screen paint kit. This will ensure you paint the best green screen background, which is smooth and free from defects.

How much is a green screen?

Green screen backdrops can be very expensive. Our green screen paint is a more affordable option and costs $199.

Can you use anything for a green screen?

For the best results we recommend using a high quality green screen paint or fabric backdrop. This will make it much easier to isolate the subjects in your video.

Can you use a green sheet as a green screen?

You can, but you will likely not receive the same results as with a professional green screen paint or fabric as a very specific colour of green is needed for premium results.

What size should my green screen be?

This will depend on how you intend to use the green screen – behind a desk, waist and up view, full body view or have multiple people on screen.

Behind Your Desk – This setup will only require one tin of paint to cover 6m2 (or less) and is suitable if you are sitting behind a desk streaming, creating content, or video conferencing. It will allow you to move during the shot.

Waist & Up View – this setup will require one tin of paint, covering 6m2. It will allow you to show subjects standing with their torso and above. This will allow you to move during filming too with a dimension of 1.5m x 4m.

Full Body View – this setup will require one tin of paint, covering 6m2, which will allow for limited movement. An ideal setup for photography and videography, but you may require more paint tins for greater coverage and allowing for more movement.

Two People On Screen – this setup will require one tin of paint, covering 6m2, which will allow for very limited movement. An ideal setup for photography and videography, but we recommend two tins for greater coverage if the subjects are going to move a lot.

How to use a green screen?

Once you have installed your green screen you must ensure you have the correct lighting to help with a smoother post-production process and better final result. It’s important to have diffused lighting (i.e through a softbox) set from above your green screen to avoid any directional shadows. The next step is to begin recording and editing your final product. When filming, it should be noted that there needs to be sufficient spacing between the green screen and the subject being filmed to avoid a green hue being reflected upon the subject.

How to Install Smart Green Screen Paint?
